The one-line TV review special…
I’m always getting asked what I’m watching and what’s good. So here we go. Not all are good (as you’ll see) but I’ve watched this bunch...and here are my thoughts!
Willkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome!
Let’s get to it then. The bonus edition of my newsletter. Here’s some telly chat - most of which you should enjoy.
BTW, what are you watching? Please let me know. Leaving a suggestion in the comments with help others.
And let me know what you think about these…
THE COSY WOSY ONE: Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day In New York ticks all the boxes for that totally cosy weekend afternoon viewing. Warm and fuzzy vibes. (Amazon)
HEARTWARMING AND REAL: American Fiction was an Oscar contender and it’s easy to see why. This questions society, makes you laugh and keeps you off your phone. Loved it. (Amazon)
THE THRILLER: The Gone was something I came across by accident but kept me captivated all the way through. Not too dark for those of you who are squeamish. (BBC iPlayer)
THE LET DOWN: The fanfare surrounding Palm Royale has been insane and it totally sucked me in. The truth – I don’t really get the fuss. Looks fabulous (obvs) but Wiig in the lead role just doesn’t work for me. Thoughts? (Apple)
THE RETURNER: Loot season one was a HOOT. I’m dead happy it’s back really soon and hope Maya Rudolph continues to have fun with this funny story. Catch up before S2 now. (Apple)
THE BEST THING ON TELLY RN: Kin season one only went to set up the plans for season two which is a revelation. The best writing, characters, and plot. A gem. (BBC iPlayer)
THE HANGOVER WATCH: Gray is fronted by Patricia Clarkson and features esteemed actors including It’s A Sin star Lydia West and Rupert Everett. The latter feels like he’s taken a pay cheque on this one ;-) But I’ve mildly enjoyed this thrilled, black comedy and spy caper. You don’t have to think too much. (Netflix)
THE GEEKY MOMENT: Ancient Egypt by Train with Professor Alice Roberts is the perfect mix of total escapism, history and comforting Sunday night viewing. I was fascinated and have watched it twice. (Channel 4)
THE GAMESHOW: There are so many of my friends who haven’t gone there with The Traitors. Why? It’s fabulous fun. And it’s Claudia. What’s not to like? (BBC iPlayer)
THE ONE YOU FORGOT: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The Offer was one of the best things on telly across the past couple of years. The story of how they made The Godfather and the behind-the-scenes trials and tribulations. Love it. (Paramount+)
THE CLASSIC: Series 27 (!) of Silent Witness was a real winner for me. The show feels back to its best once more. Great stories, brilliant suspense and great performances. (BBC iPlayer)
THE REBIRTH: Frasier is back and you know what…it kinda works. It also stars Rodders from Only Fools in a role that will no doubt make him a household name in the US. Give it a go. (Paramount+)
DON’T FORGET THIS GEM: Shrinking stars Harrison Ford and Jason Segal in a great story about grief, loss and shrinks. Thrilled this one is returning for a second season soon. Try it. (Apple)
YE OLDE FAITHFUL: Ru Paul’s Drag Race season 16 was a great watch again. The Kweens really are a lovely talented bunch. Still feels fresh as a format. (WOW/MTV)
That’s all for now, Folks.
Quite the list! "American Fiction" was SO smart. I have some wee suggestions, as well. The New Look is excellent, about Dior and Chanel (what a piece of work she was!) during WW2. "After Love" with Joanna Scanlan is terrific. I finally got around to "The Morning Show" which surprised me because it was better than I expected. Started something with David Morrisey and I can't remember the name of it. Limited series, but once you're hooked it's off the air until next year!
