It’s officially PFEIFFER Sunday!
Michelle Pfeiffer is a legend. How she’s not won an Oscar is beyond me. Here’s some magical career moments from her on this murky Sunday.
Willkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome!
I feel like there are a million things I’d love to write long form. But all of them are on a big of a negative slant this week and there’s so much negativity out there right now. So, you know what - I’m going to shut the fuck up, not add fuel to that fire and give you a list of movies to watch. Some new. Some old. All to lift the spirits. All starring one of my favourites, Michelle Pfeiffer. Because it feels like we need Pfeiffer right now.
When I met her at the Stardust London premiere we chatted about her films, her work and, to be frank, I opened with the line: “Michelle, I’ve loved you since Grease 2.” I literally lost every shred of cool from the get-go. She squeezed my hand in a generously mumsy way and I could hear her subliminally saying “BLESS” in return. I don’t care. I met one of my heroes.
And finally, I feel a little affinity with Michelle as Piper in German is indeed Pfeiffer. And I have German roots. So, there we have it, we are practically related.
Enjoy these picks!
1. Grease 2
What!!!!! You’ve not watched the superior film from the Grease franchise? Come on now, get to it. This film was a cult classic. In fact, so many of my friends have come out as closet Grease 2 fans across the past few years. Some of them don’t even hide it. I’d like to highlight my friend Jack Savoretti who is pretty much the only person I know who knows every single word of the film that shot Michelle Pfeiffer to fame and gave us classic songs like Cool Rider, Who’s That Guy and A Girl For All Seasons. It’s nectar for a good mood. Zinnoni forever.
2. Frankie & Johnny
In my opinion, potentially one of the most romantic films of all time. Michelle is Frankie the waitress, Al Pacino is the new rough-round-the-edges chef and this tells the story of two people coming together and falling in love. It really warms the cockles. The most amazing soundtrack and the scene with Clair de lune will no doubt bring you to tears. It’s a special film.
3. Batman Returns
Michelle as Catwoman is one of the coolest moments in Batman history. That outfit, the whip control (she actually learnt how to do the stunts and amazed the crew throughout shooting). As Selina Kyle she makes your fanny tingle, as Catwoman she makes you want to walk with a trendy new feline slant – she steals every scene. I was obsessed by Michelle in this film when I was young. And having watched it last week it really holds up in a magical Tim Burton way. The score is terrific too.
4. Scarface
Arguably one of the best gangster films of all time? Michelle went straight from Grease 2 to her role in this playing Tony Montana’s wife, Elvira. It’s violent, Michelle’s never been cooler in the nightclub dance floor scene…she even makes you feel hot under the collar when she’s hoofing in cocaine from her little fingernail.
5. The Fabulous Baker Boys
Again, this is quite the film. Showing Pfeiffer’s insane talent for singing and performance. The chemistry with Jeff Bridges is off the scale and there’s an overriding romantic slant here. It’s the story of two struggling musicians, who happen to be brothers, and change their act when they team up with a beautiful, up-and-coming singer. Nobody sings on top of a piano like Pfeiffer. Not even Geri Halliwell when she’s trying to impress movie execs ;-)
6. One Fine Day
This is one of those classic easy watching comedies. Pfeiffer is opposite George Clooney for this one and you could imagine them together in real life. Clooney seems to always be able to muster up that screen chemistry with his leading ladies. It’s exactly what you need if you’re searching for some cosy.
7. Hairspray
I love Michelle when she sings. And this was camptastic – when she leapt into the role of Velma Von Tussle. Her rendition of Miss Baltimore Crabs had me howling with her nonchalant comedic delivery. It’s always a good moment when Michelle takes a role with a spiky edge.
I’m just scraping the surface with Michelle’s credits and career. She’s a wonder and I truly hope there are many more Pfeiffer credits to come. And an Oscar. How that’s not happened is beyond me. Also, a natural beauty who is ageing in the best possible way. I adore her. So show the Pfeiffer some love and watch a Pfeiffer movie on this gloomy Sunday afternoon…
Here’s that behind the scenes clip when she was gifted a round of applause by the crew on Batman Returns. I MEAN.
Catch you all soon.
Oh btw, what’s your favourite Pfeiffer film? Give me some other picks.
Love her. ‘Wolf’ was on TV the other night (shockingly now over 20 years old - it was made in 1994!) and even though it’s a bit of a silly movie, you can’t get much better than Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfieffer as the two leads. I was captivated from beginning to end (it also made me realize how much I miss watching Jack Nicholson.)
I agree with your picks. She was amazing in ‘What Lies Beneath’ too, which is genuinely terrifying!
